The Last Day of an Old Life

Can you hear that? It is the season, turning…

Tomorrow, many things will remain the same. A new year won’t start, and an old world is largely unlikely to alter. However, this life in my pocket will come to an end. It was fashioned in order to help me escape a tyranny that no longer exists. It has been outgrown, and outstripped, and finally outlasted. There are seeds in these sheets and under the bed that are begging to be planted, and so they shall.

Tomorrow, not everything will be different, but some things will be. Some words will be asked to alter the landscape. Others will be written simply to be destroyed and replaced with other directions, or meanings, or even beliefs. It is tiring when the assumption for everyone is that they know what it is that you are made of because it is the same dirt that fashioned them. Not all crucibles are the same.

Not all minds are as determined.

This space needs to grow, and so there must be fresh planting. Old wood will not be wasted, but recycled, used sensibly. There will be spaces cleared for new ideas to be presented. Appropriate credit will be placed and signposted. There will be those of you who will want to know why this is taking place, and their explanation will be forthcoming in due course. There is a bench here for you to wait on.

Sit and look upon the person that you have become in the last eight months. Is this someone you feel proud of? Are there things you would like to alter now, instead of waiting for a new year for that to happen? A new year can begin whenever you choose to. It is only history that records by that start point. You are not that history and never need to be dictated to by such constraints.

I am a constant work in progress.

Choose a door you would like to walk through to this new year. Visualise its shape and colour. What does it smell of? How does it feel under your hand as you push it open. There is no handle, no turning to enter, simply a quiet shift of weight into your hand and there, we have instigated change. Space and time have subtly altered. This is the beginning of a transitional period. Keep moving.

The practicalities are, as yet, not set in stone. All that matters are determination and belief. It is time for a shift of colour, of shape, to replace some of this furniture. It is the beginning of space and calm. There is no less chaos or uncertainty, but what does not exist is the sense you are being fooled. The reality of your situation is now inescapably apparent. This is a life that can improve.

Here is the last day of your old life.
